Rock out with your fellow air guitarists at the CCC theater’s production of “Airness,” a play about a young girl finding herself throughout an air guitar competition to find her airness and win nationals.

This spring college theater department production, directed by Allison Moon, will run until June 1. at the Niemeyer Osterman Theater at Clackamas Community College’s Oregon City campus. The production offers a heartfelt and comedic show, filled with unexpected twists, insightful conversations and charismatic characters that will make you laugh despite yourself.

“Airness” follows the journey of Nina, a professional guitarist turned amateur air guitarist, who joins the battle for the title of national champion in air guitar. She quickly befriends a group of expert air guitarists and finds a mentor who guides her in finding herself through air guitar. This show challenges topics such as complex relationship dynamics, being a female in a male-dominated space and finding yourself and your inner “airness.”

Camden McCorkle, who plays The Nina, rocks in their role, expressing the inner turmoil the character faces throughout the show. Their sarcasm and deadpan comedy brings a welcome contrast between the more lighthearted comedy shown by the supporting cast while enhancing the overall experience.

The romance between The Nina and Shreddy Eddy, who Kendall Morrow portrays, adds a layer to the production’s chemistry. Their journey together, starting as friends and growing into something more, may surprise some, but I consider it fitting.

The technical department really shines in this production through the new lighting equipment, set design and costuming. The use of multi-colored light bars and moving stage lights brings out the rock concert experience and helps portray the characters’ emotions. The set design and costuming do well to show the environment these characters are in and their personalities.

The most memorable part of this production would be the supporting cast. Most noteworthy would be Golden Thunder, played by Jorge Apodaca, who recently ran for student government president, and who’s charismatic and unrestrained in his love of air guitar.

“Airness” delves deeper into the true meaning of air guitar and achieving ultimate airness through inward reflection and growth.

“Airness” will run from May 22 to June 1. CCC students receive free admission into this production.
